Bisected by the Missouri River, and named after the Lakota and Dakota Indian tribes, South Dakota has a vast array of land types and many tourist attractions. The state is divided into two socio-economically distinct halves, known to residents as "West River" and "East River". Fertile soil in the eastern part of the state is used to grow a variety of crops, while ranching is the predominant agricultural activity in the west.
The Black Hills, a group of low pine-covered mountains, is home to Mount Rushmore, a major state tourist destination that attracts over three million visitors annually. The area has other attractions including Deadwood, and tourism contributes over two billion dollars annually to the economy. One of the largest tourist events in the state is the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The five-day event draws over 450,000 attendants, increasing the state’s population by fifty percent or more.
Agriculture has historically been a key component of the South Dakota economy. Although other industries have expanded rapidly in recent decades, agricultural production is still very important to the state's economy, especially in rural areas. The five most valuable agricultural products in South Dakota are cattle, corn, soybeans, wheat, and hogs. Agriculture-related industries such as meat packing and ethanol production also have a considerable economic impact on the state. South Dakota is the sixth leading ethanol-producing state in the nation.
Historically dominated by an agricultural economy and a rural lifestyle, South Dakota has recently sought to diversify its economy to attract and retain residents. The service industry is the largest economic contributor in South Dakota. This sector includes the retail, finance, and health care industries. Government spending is another important segment of the state's economy, providing over ten percent of the gross state product. Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Rapid City, is the second-largest single employer in the state.

As much as one wants to be self - sufficient and handy around the home, there is one area no one but the best plumber feels comfortable in: under the sink or the toilet. Thats why most homeowners have to pony up the money that a plumber demands (and rightly so) for his services, and that means finding the best man, usually as soon as possible. W...
Choosing the best roofer for a home should be a concentrated and intense search; after all, the average homeowner replaces his roof well, he never replaces it. And his search is therefore not for a competent roofer, but for the best there is. This is a lifetime investment hes deciding upon. And surprisingly enough, the rules that usually ap...
Fiber cement siding is largely unsung in the do - it - yourself construction industry, although its one of the most durable mediums for exterior siding out there. Its practical and economical, and easily applied to the point where any homeowner with a do - it - yourself penchant can put up his own siding without much difficulty (although hell probably have to spring fo...
Drywall is the perfect building material for economic and functional walls that need not be cosmetically attractive, such as walls in a shed, a basement, an attic and an outbuilding. It even creates ceilings. Best of all, one can paint it, wallpaper it or even attach wood paneling for a lasting and attractive look, at a fraction of what a wood, br...
